Diabetes Forcast TZD Metformin 2003
Obese people are more likely to develop diabetes. Prior to the
development of diabetes, many people have "Impaired Glucose
Tolerance". Impaired glucose tolerance is a condition where your
blood sugar is normal when fasting (before you eat), but is too high
after drinking a sugary drink. Impaired glucose tolerance often leads
to diabetes.
You are invited to participate in a research study on this pre
diabetic condition. You will qualify for this study if you are
- Above ideal body weight (BMI between 28-38)
- Between 35 –65 year old
- Impaired glucose tolerant (IGT)
This study is designed to test the effects of two different drugs (pioglitazone
and metformin) on numerous features of this condition including
insulin secretion and metabolism, fat metabolism and fat accumulation
in the body (including muscle). These drugs, pioglitazone and
metformin, are commonly used to treat diabetes.
If you qualify and choose to participate, studies involving blood
sampling, fat and muscle biopsies will be performed before and after
10 weeks of taking one of the above medications.
The compensation will be $625 for the completion of the study.
